Sometimes my 89 at 40000 miles has a little notchy shifting. I don't have the second gear issue as described but sometimes the shifting is a little notchy. Well, today coming to a stop downshifting it did something weird. I think I had it in second and was downshifting to neutral and i heard gears making a rattle noise like it was trying to catch. Then it went into neutral just fine. Should I be concerned?
sounds to me like you just kicked the lever down a little to far and you started to hit first.....hard to tell by not actually hearing it though

You`ve checked chain is not a fraction tight and clutch is completey disengaging, right?

No ill have to do that. Sure sounded like tranny noise but happened so fast cant be sure
My 88 starts doing that when its time to bleed the clutch , or when the slave is starting to leak,, usually lack of lever travel is a good sign
