Hi all,
My name is Justin. I'm new here and recently purchased my first FJ. it's a 93 FJ1200.
I found that while this is a fantastic bike in almost every way, I can't help thinking how much nicer it would be with a bit more exhaust noise.
I have a fairly limited budget at the moment and was wondering if there was a way to remove baffles from the mufflers, rather than buying som straight through cans for it.
Also, if there was a way, would I also need to jet carbies or would it still run fine?
Thanks. :good2:
Yes you can, there should be a write up on this in the files section. If you still have your stock air box you may not need to rejet. Opening up the pipes and pod air filters, yes, rejet will be required.
Welcome, now shoot over to the introduction section and say hello.

:hi: Welcome Justin. No you won`t have to rejet if all is stock, but you WILL need ear protection. (so will most of the residents on your island) There`s another 2 on this forum from down your way. Post a pic. :drinks:

Ummmmm, well, I know it is difficult to say it  but no, you can´t (or I thinked that way). 5 or 6 years ago an FJ owner sent me a complete detail of the OE mufflers completely open. And it was impossible due to the inner design, with a lot of walls and a labyrinth inside. I promise that I´m going to look for the pics in my old archives... BUT if FJmonkey says it is possible, it could be possible
FJmonkey, amigo: I´ve have not find the file that you speak about. ???
Welcome wazza, where in tas are you mate,, I've checked out my original pipes, looks like three rivets holding the end cap on, buti doubt its as easy as taking that off and pulling the guts out , check out your closest wrecker , may swap your original cans for a later / easier to mod set

"Welcome Justin. No you won`t have to rejet
if all is stock,..post a pic" My thoughts too Alf, Hence the request ta post a pic. (popcorn)
I miss:
you don´t have to re jet even with a KN filter in the OE airbox and open mufflers. All FJs come rich from the factory
I guess some files from the old Yahoo site have not been moved or copied over. This link should help. http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/yamahafj/files/EXHAUST%20MOD/ (http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/yamahafj/files/EXHAUST%20MOD/)
I advice that if FJMonkey say yes, IT IS YES
Thanks, my friend
Anyway I´m going to look for that pics showing the muffler autopsy
And FWIW, the FJs here in the States were lean to pass emissions, not sure about the rest of the world.
Here in Europe the lean required to pass the control emissions is got through the mixture screws only. And I think there at US is the same (except CA) because mains and needles are the same (only without grooves)
Of course any motorbike that's comfortably 20+ years old will be undoubtedly stock, as owners refitting jets is a terribly rare practice, and nearly as rare as the machine being taken to a dealer that makes changes for no apparent reason.....
Also, fuel the world round burns exactly the same, because it's of course mixed the same the world over, providing a single jetting is sufficent the world over.
Fortunately, lawmakers have banded together and ensured that all countries have the same requirements for meeting emissions checks, so there's little reason to even look into the carbs, as they're undoubtedly perfect from the factory.
Opening the mufflers should be quite simple if you have a large drill and aren't afraid of a bit of fabrication.

In Spain we say: "lo prometido es deuda". It mean something similar to "like I promised I got a debt and now I do it"... well, more or less :pardon:

The easiest way for me is to buy a pair of cans from a XJR and do the trick to them
Is that allll that's in them,, fiberglass and perferated tube must of been expensive back then
