Title: Gas cap options for 85
Post by: thuber3040 on October 03, 2009, 02:55:42 PM
The locking flap for my gas cap is gone, is there a replacement for that, or can I change to a newer year cap assembly, I don't want to give up my larger tank, and mine is in pretty good shape with no dents, so I just need to fix the cap bit

I thought someone posted that many hard to find parts are still available in the UK through the FJ club(s) there. Would be pricey but keep it mind as a last resort.  :empathy3:

I've been running my '84 without the swinging part for years now.   (yea, I live in Phx, err hell).    Lee has a theory that running a tank bag is what knocks them loose/off.  I find that the biggest offense is the gunk that builds up from presumably gas vapors that linger about the key hole.   Easy to clean.  I didn't find any of the lock covers when I did a short search.  Found a parts bike with one, then it disappeared too.   I gave up on that 'feature' and now just clean the gunk annually.    :yahoo:

Only years I know that fit are the '84 - '85.    I think the '86 and up switched to the aviation style cap and would require a lot of modification to swap.
